Arturo Castro
Arturo Castro is an artist, engineer and educator based in Berlin, working at the intersection of real-time graphics, interactive media and games for more than two decades. He is a long-term core developer of openFrameworks, the open-source creative coding toolkit he helped shape since 2005 and which is used worldwide by artists, designers and researchers. He is also the creator of Rin, a game engine and creative coding framework written from the ground up in Rust.
His work spans commissioned technology for clients such as Google, Samsung, Intel and Reactable Systems, alongside artistic projects exhibited at the London Design Museum, Maison d'Ailleurs, Eyebeam and Moscow's Multimedia Art Museum, among others. Projects include Faces, an early real-time face substitution installation; interaction prototyping for Google's Soli radar sensor; and the interactive lighting system for the White House Christmas trees as part of Google's Made With Code initiative. He co-directed NAMAVE, an atmospheric 3D puzzle adventure built on his own engine.
His current work focuses on the meeting point of machine learning and real-time graphics: integrating large language models with Unreal Engine to build emergent NPC behavior and storytelling systems, and researching prompt- and sketch-driven 3D scene generation for investigative journalism with Art+Com and Deutsche Welle. He has published academic research on multi-agent storytelling and on the political imaginaries of cryptocurrencies, and teaches regularly, from openFrameworks and computer vision workshops at institutions across Europe and the US to advanced Rust courses for corporate clients.
