Alexandra Borchardt

Alexandra Borchardt is a senior journalist, independent advisor and university teacher with more than 30 years of experience in newsrooms and management. She serves as board director at Republik AG (Switzerland), on the board of the Constructive Foundation (Denmark) and in the Expert Panel of the World Association of News Publishers. Alexandra teaches leadership and strategy as a honorary Professor for Leadership and Digital Transformation at TU Munich’s TUM School of Management and is affiliated with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford as a Senior Research Associate after having created and led their profit centre Leadership Programmes. Prior to this she was managing editor of Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), Germany’s leading quality daily.

Alexandra is the lead author of four EBU News Reports, the latest ones being “Leading Newsrooms in the Age of Generative AI” (2025), “Trusted Journalism in the Age of Generative AI”(2024) and “Climate Journalism That Works: Between Knowledge and Impact” (2023). She is also co-author of a report on Gen Z and News published in April 2026 by Mediengruppe Wiener Zeitung. Her latest book was on journalism and democracy (German only: “Mehr Wahrheit wagen – warum die Demokratie einen starken Journalismus braucht”, Dudenverlag 2020). In her work for the Council of Europe, Alexandra served as a rapporteur on the Committee of Experts on Freedom of Expression and Digital Technologies and prior to that as vice chair on the Committee of Experts on Quality Journalism in the Digital Age.
